Plovdiv Medical University

The Medical University of Plovdiv is a Bulgarian public university founded in 1945. It is located in the ancient city of Plovdiv and offers a range of medical programs, with many courses available in English for international students. The university is recognized by international bodies like the World Health Organization (WHO) and is a popular destination for students from around the world. 

Programs of study

The university is organized into four main faculties and a medical college, with multiple programs offered in English. 

English-taught programs 

  • Medicine: A six-year Master’s degree program that includes pre-clinical, clinical, and practical training at the affiliated hospital.
  • Dental Medicine: A five-and-a-half-year Master’s degree program with a strong focus on practical and specialized clinical training.
  • Pharmacy: A five-year Master of Science program, which is an integrated bachelor’s and master’s degree.
  • Healthcare Management: A Bachelor’s degree program with the possibility of further training for a Master’s degree. 

Other programs

  • Medical College Specialties: Professional Bachelor’s degrees are offered in fields like Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy, and Medical Cosmetics, primarily in Bulgarian. 

Admissions and requirements

Admission is based on academic merit and an entrance exam. Applications open in the spring and close in late summer. 

  • Entrance Exam: Applicants must pass an online entrance exam in Biology and Chemistry, and for English-taught courses, an English language diagnostic test is also offered.
  • Academic Requirements: A high school diploma with a strong academic background, particularly in Biology and Chemistry, is necessary. The minimum average score is typically around 62%.
  • Language Proficiency: Non-native English speakers must prove a B1 level of English proficiency with a certificate (IELTS, TOEFL, etc.) or by taking the university’s diagnostic test.
  • Indian Students: A qualifying NEET score is required for Indian applicants who wish to practice in India.

Tuition for international students varies depending on the program. 

  • Medicine (English):
    • First year: €9,000
    • Second–sixth year: €8,000
  • Dental Medicine (English):
    • First year: €9,000
    • Second–sixth year: €8,000
  • Pharmacy (English): €6,000 per year.
